Gary Neville: The one thing that shocked me about Antonio Conte at Chelsea
Gary Neville has his say on Antonio Conte's decision to bring David Luiz back to Chelsea last summer
Gary Neville has admitted that he was “shocked” when Antonio Conte opted to bring David Luiz back to Chelsea last summer.
The Italian manager opted to re-sign the defender from Paris Saint-Germain two years after he was deemed to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge by then-manager Jose Mourinho.
Luiz has established himself as one of Chelsea’s top performers this season and has been a regular fixture in the heart of the Blues’ defence.
And although Neville admits that he was very surprised to see Conte bring the Brazilian defender back to Stamford Bridge last summer, he has been impressed by his displays.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville said: “The one thing that shocked me was signing Luiz.
“I didn’t think he was a Conte player. He had Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci with Juventus and Italy. They were hard solid, mean defenders. You couldn’t get through them.”
Chelsea will be hoping to be crowned Premier League champions on Friday night when the Blues take on West Brom at The Hawthorns on Friday night.
The west London club will secure the title if they beat the Baggies.
