Rio Ferdinand: This is what sets Chelsea apart from everyone else
Rio Ferdinand explains why he has been so impressed by Chelsea's counter-attacking play this season
Rio Ferdinand believes that the main thing which sets Chelsea apart from the rest of the teams in the Premier League is their impressive counter-attacking form.
The Blues are close to winning the Premier League title in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge at the club following his appointment at Stamford Bridge last summer.
The west London side have not had the distraction of European football this term and so have had the luxury of being able to focus purely on domestic affairs.
Conte switched his side to a 3-4-3 formation earlier in the season and the Blues have earned plenty of praise for their strong displays this term.
And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that it is Chelsea’s “brilliance” on the break which makes them worthy champions this season.
Ferdinand told the Times: “The thing that sets Chelsea apart from the rest is brilliance on the break.
“There is no one style of play guaranteed to win you the Premier League but counter attacking has been their key, rather like it was for Leicester last season.
“In March, Eden Hazard scored a goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 win at West Ham, set up by N’Golo Kante and Pedro, that was the moment I sat up and went: ‘Whoah, this is a special team.’
“Not since my Manchester United team with Cristiano Ronaldo in his pomp have I seen a side counter so quickly, so efficiently and with such devastating effect.”
Chelsea are chasing a domestic double this season and will take on Arsenal in the FA Cup final at the end of the month.
