Jamie Carragher has claimed that there was “no way” it was Antonio Conte’s decision to bring David Luiz back to Chelsea last summer.

The Brazilian defender returned to Stamford Bridge last year after spending two seasons away at Paris Saint-Germain.

Luiz has earned plenty of praise for his performances this season and played a key part in helping Chelsea win the Premier League title in Conte’s first season in campaign at the club.

The defender slotted seamlessly into Conte’s 3-4-3 formation as the Blues bounced back from their disappointing campaign last term and won the title.

However, former Liverpool star Carragher reckons that it was not Conte’s choice to bring Luiz back to Chelsea last year.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “David Luiz has been a revelation this year but there is no way he [Conte] actually wanted David Luiz.

“I think he was looking at one of those Juventus back three to come in – Leonardo Bonucci or Georgio Chiellini.”
