Paul Merson states his prediction for Chelsea v Middlesbrough
The Arsenal legend is backing Chelsea to beat Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Monday night
Paul Merson is tipping Chelsea to ease to a 3-1 win against Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
The Blues can take a step closer to their first Premier League title under Antonio Conte following the Italian’s appointment last summer.
Indeed, the Premier League leaders are four points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur with three games to go.
Chelsea eased to an emphatic 3-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon thanks to goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Gary Cahill and Willian.
The west London outfit have won their last two Premier League games to leave Chelsea on the brink of a second title in three seasons.
Writing in his Sky Sports column, former Arsenal midfielder Merson backed the west London club to beat relegation-threatened Middlesbrough.
“Middlesbrough went down in the game against City in a blaze of glory. We saw something from them in the game that we haven’t seen for a few weeks. The problem is they have to win this game and it could leave them open at the back,” Merson said.
“That’s perfect for the way Chelsea are set up and I can’t see them being stopped, especially in front of their own fans at Stamford Bridge. I do fancy Middlesbrough to score but it won’t be enough to halt Chelsea.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last term following a dismal defence of their 2014-15 top-flight crown.
The west London outfit will face Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley later this month.
