Antonio Conte wants Chelsea to sign 30-year-old ahead of Man United – report
Antonio Conte wants to bring Dries Mertens to Chelsea this summer, according to reports in Belgium
Antonio Conte is keen to bring Dries Mertens to Chelsea this summer and beat Manchester United to the signature of the Belgium star, according to reports.
Belgian outlet HLN is reporting that the Chelsea manager has identified the 30-year-old as one of his top transfer targets this summer as he begins to think about bolstering his squad ahead of next season.
The report claims that Chelsea boss Conte is “crazy” about Mertens and is keen to sign the Belgium international from Napoli once the transfer window reopens.
Manchester United are said to have scouted Mertens earlier this season as Jose Mourinho ponders a move for the Napoli man.
However, it seems that Chelsea can be considered to be leading the race for Mertens’ signature, if the latest reports are to be believed.
Martens is thought to have been offered a new contract at Napoli with a £30m release clause – but there is yet to be any announcement about whether he has signed it.
Chelsea are likely to want to bring in significant reinforcements this summer as Conte prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next season.
