Jamie Carragher reacts to Cesar Azpilicueta’s display in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Watford
The Liverpool legend believes Chelsea fans are seeing a new side of Cesar Azpilicueta's game
Jamie Carragher says Cesar Azpilicueta has been showing Chelsea fans a new side of his game after the defender scored in Monday night’s thriller with Watford at Stamford Bridge.
The Spain international retained his place in Antonio Conte’s starting line-up despite the Chelsea manager making wholesale changes to his side after winning the title at West Brom on Friday night.
Azpilicueta started at wing-back as opposed to centre-half on Monday night after the Spanish defender had teed up Michy Batshuayi for Chelsea’s winner at the Hawthorns Stadium to seal the title.
And the 30-year-old continued his fine record with Chelsea’s second goal after John Terry’s opener had been cancelled out.
Azpilicueta fired home from just inside the area as his shot managed to find its way past a host of Chelsea and Watford players and beat Heurelho Gomes in the away side’s goal.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher heaped praise on the versatile Chelsea defender for his performances defensively and offensively throughout the campaign.
“He has been venturing forward,” Carragher said.
“What a great first touch and great strike. We’ve seen a lot more to his game. We’ve said he’s the best defender in the Premier League. We’ve seen this guy can play now.”
