Pundit: Forget about Alexis Sanchez, these are Arsenal’s three key players
The former Arsenal midfielder names Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck as Arsene Wenger's most-important players
Charlie Nicholas has pinpointed Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck are Arsenal’s three key players.
The Gunners were 2-0 winners against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon thanks to goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck.
Ramsey produced one of his best performances of the 2016-17 season as the Wales international ran the Arsenal midfield in the Premier League clash.
Arsene Wenger’s decision to start Welbeck paid dividends after the England striker’s powerful header to double the home side’s lead at The Emirates.
Mesut Ozil made two assists and two goals in April to rekindle some of his best creative form despite uncertainty about his Arsenal future.
Alexis Sanchez made an electric start to the current campaign but the 28-year-old’s form has dropped off in the second half of the campaign.
Speaking to his Sky Sports column about Arsenal’s most-important players ahead of their trip to Southampton, Nicholas said:
“Aaron Ramsey is playing in more of an advanced role and he’s much better when he can make those runs, while it also brings better balance to the team with him playing along with Danny Welbeck.
“Their movement brings more out of Mesut Ozil compared to the static Olivier Giroud.
“They are the three most important Arsenal players at the moment as Alexis Sanchez is just pretending to be really interested, coming deep to get the ball rather than really having a go at defenders.”
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table.
