Arsene Wenger rates Arsenal’s chances of finishing in top four
The Arsenal manager discusses the north London side's chances of finishing in the top four
Arsene Wenger has attempted to play down the chances of Arsenal finishing in the top four.
The Gunners eased to a 2-0 win against Southampton on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud in the second half at St Mary’s.
Arsenal have now secured successive Premier League victories following their 2-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend.
Wenger’s side are in fifth place in the table and three points behind Manchester City, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
The north London side can move to within a point of Liverpool if Arsenal win their game in hand on the Merseyside outfit.
Speaking at his post-match media conference about Arsenal’s chances of securing a top-four finish, Wenger said:
“I believe that I never questioned the character of my side.
“It’s not because you lose games that people expect you to win that you have no character.
“But it happened to us. We went through a bad patch, I believe that’s a good opportunity to show your character, how you come back and how you recover. Maybe the Man City game gave us confidence a little bit.
“Let’s not go too quickly to conclusions and focus and give everything on Saturday.”
Arsenal have never failed to finish in the top four during Wenger’s spell in charge of the north London club after he took over the reins back in 1996.
The Gunners will take on Premier League leaders Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
