The Manchester United number one felt that his Spanish team-mate deserved to be named the club's player of the year
David De Gea insisted Ander Herrera was a deserving winner of the Manchester United player of the year award.
The Spanish international ended De Gea’s dominance of the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award on Thursday night.
The defensive midfielder’s dogged performances throughout the 2016-17 season were acknowledged at the club’s end-of-season awards night.
Herrera has established himself as a regular under Jose Mourinho following the Portuguese coach’s appointment as their new manager back in May 2016.
The 27-year-old has scored one goal and has made six assists in 31 appearances in the Premier League this term.
Herrera has made a further 18 appearances in Manchester United’s cup competitions in the 2016-17 campaign.
De Gea posted the above snap on his Instagram page and wrote the following caption:
“Well deserved amigo @anderherrera 🙌🏻🏆 #mufcpoty”
Herrera moved to Manchester United in a £27m deal from Athletic Bilbao in the 2014 summer transfer window under Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils will take on Dutch giants Ajax in the Europa League final.
