Jamie Redknapp: Arsenal should have signed this player, not Granit Xhaka
The former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder claims that Arsenal should have signed Granit Xhaka in the summer
Jamie Redknapp insists Arsenal should have signed N’Golo Kante instead of Granit Xhaka last summer.
The Gunners signed the Switzerland international in a £33m deal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach back in May 2016.
However, Xhaka has failed to established himself as a key player in Arsenal’s first-team and has been criticised for his erratic performances.
Kante, on the other, has been a revelation since his move to Chelsea in a £34m switch from 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City last summer.
The France international was named the PFA player of the year for his outstanding performances for the Blues despite being a defensive midfielder.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Wenger’s decision to sign Xhaka, former Spurs midfielder Redknapp questioned why the Arsenal boss didn’t look to sign Kante.
“Arsenal should have signed N’Golo Kante in the summer but ended up with Granit Xhaka,” Redknapp said.
“These are the mistakes Arsenal make time and time again.
“They wait too long to make their transfers because no one ever seems to be able to make their mind up.”
Arsenal are in fifth place in the Premier League table ahead of their final top-flight fixture against Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners could still end the season with some silverware if Arsenal beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
