Ian Wright: Why Arsene Wenger deserves credit for ‘brave’ Arsenal decision
The Arsenal legend heaps praise on Arsene Wenger for two important selection decisions
Ian Wright has praised Arsene Wenger for starting David Ospina and Per Mertesacker in Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Chelsea in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
The Gunners were looking to restore some much-needed pride after the north London side finished in fifth place in the Premier League table in table to miss out on a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny was suspended for the FA Cup final after the France international was sent off in the Gunners’s 3-1 win against Everton in their final Premier League game.
German defender Shkodran Mustafi and Brazilian centre-half Gabriel Paulista were both absent for the cup final due to injury problems.
Wenger was forced to start with Arsenal club captain Per Mertesacker despite the German international’s lack of first-team action this season.
“You have to say, Wenger was very brave in playing David Ospina and Per Mertesacker,” Wright told BBC Sport.
“People will say that Chelsea didn’t play as well as they could but no one before this game fancied Arsenal. The fact is, they did it.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup three times in the past four seasons.
The Gunners signed five players in the 2016 summer transfer window after finishing in second place last term.
