Ian Wright: This Arsenal star will cause more problems than Olivier Giroud
The Arsenal legend explains the difference between Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck
Ian Wright has urged Arsene Wenger to start Danny Welbeck ahead of Olivier Giroud in the Arsenal team.
The England international has been in excellent form when the striker has been given a chance in Wenger’s starting line-up.
The Arsenal forward missed out on a place in his starting XI for the north London derby after Wenger opted to go with Giroud up front for the 2-0 loss.
Welbeck, though, scored the second goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against his former side Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon – and Giroud found the net in the 2-0 win over Southampton in midweek.
Speaking to BBC Sport’s 606 podcast about Welbeck’s performances in the Arsenal team, Wright had a message for Wenger about the former Manchester United striker.
“Players like Danny with pace are always going to cause teams more problems than Giroud,” Wright said.
“It was a strange decision to start Giroud [against Tottenham]. Spurs would have feared Danny more than Olivier. Danny can stretch the team.”
Welbeck moved to Arsenal in a £16m deal from Manchester United in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The England star has scored four times in 16 appearances in all competitions this term.
Welbeck’s Arsenal career has been hampered by injuries so far after initially impressing following his move from Old Trafford.
