Martin Keown: Arsenal are carrying this player, maybe he’s trying to force a move
The former Arsenal defender has been critical of Mesut Ozil's performance in the north London derby
Martin Keown has blasted Mesut Ozil for being a passenger in the Arsenal side.
The Gunners midfielder produced a muted performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon.
Dele Alli and Harry Kane scored in the bitter Premier League clash to ensure that Spurs will finish above Arsene Wenger’s side this term.
Ozil has scored seven goals and has made six assists in 28 appearances in the Premier League in the current campaign.
The Germany international has failed to agree a new contract extension with Arsenal after negotiations earlier in the 2016-17 campaign.
Ozil has less than 14 months remaining on his current Arsenal deal, which has prompted talk of a potential move in the summer.
Writing in the Daily Mail after the north London derby, former Arsenal defender Keown was critical of Ozil’s performance against Tottenham.
“Arsenal are simply carrying Mesut Ozil and they cannot afford to do so. It is very clear that he is not giving everything to the cause. It looks as if Ozil has given up on his team-mates,” Keown said.
“I don’t know whether he is trying to sulk his way to a move. Who does he think he is kidding with his performances? He is supposed to be Arsenal’s most influential player, their playmaker. Against Tottenham he was just jogging around the pitch. Alexis Sanchez started badly but grew into the game. Ozil did not make a contribution all afternoon.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal in a club-record deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013 summer transfer window.
