Phil Thompson believes Arsenal could still beat Liverpool to a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners were 4-1 winners against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium to move to within a point of Liverpool in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League competition.

Liverpool responded in style with an emphatic 4-0 win against West Ham at the London Stadium thanks to an impressive performance from Brazil international Philippe Coutinho.

Arsene Wenger’s side can move back to within a point of Liverpool should the north London side beat relegated Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

Arsenal haven’t missed out on a top-four finish since Wenger took over the reins at the London club back in 1996.

Writing in his Sky Sports column about Arsenal’s performance against Stoke and what it means for the top-four race, former Liverpool defender Thompson said:

“Arsenal had given themselves a good chance of getting in the Premier League top four with this result, so with it being away from home, I would have to give them an ‘A’.”
