Arsenal told to sign eight new players in the summer
The Arsenal legend believes Arsene Wenger needs to make eight signings in the summer transfer window
Paul Merson believes Arsene Wenger needs eight signing in the summer to overhaul his Arsenal squad.
The Gunners have endured a disappointing season in the Champions League and the Premier League this season under Wenger.
Arsenal suffered an embarrassing 10-2 loss to Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich over two legs in the Champions League last 16.
The north London side suffered defeats at the hands of Chelsea, Liverpool, Watford and West Brom to leave their title bid in tatters.
Arsenal lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in an abject derby performance to leave their slim hopes of a top-four finish all but extinguished.
Wenger’s future has been a source of relentless speculation throughout the second half of the 2016-17 season, even though the Gunners have reportedly offered their manager a two-year contract extension.
The futures of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have also filled column inches given their bumpy contract negotiations with Arsenal despite having less than 13 months remaining on their current deals.
Writing in his Daily Star column, former Arsenal midfielder Merson explained how many signings Wenger needs to make to give his squad a much-needed facelift in the summer.
“If Wenger was leaving, we would know by now. But Arsenal will be also-rans next season unless something changes,” Merson said.
“They need about eight players [in the summer transfer window]. It’s actually getting to the stage where none of their players would get into a top-five team. Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil maybe. But how long will they stick around?”
