Dietmar Hamann: What Mesut Ozil must win to earn top Arsenal contract
The former Liverpool midfielder says Mesut Ozil needs to win the Champions League or the Premier League to justify huge contract
Mesut Ozil needs to fire Arsenal to the Champions League or the Premier League to earn £300,000 a week, according to Dietmar Hamann.
The Gunners midfielder has less than 14 months remaining on his current Arsenal contract as the Germany international put negotiations with the north London club on hold until the end of the season.
Ozil is reportedly demanding £300,000 a week to stay at the north London club, despite the World Cup winner’s poor performances throughout the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
The German star is already earning a £130,000-a-week deal with Arsenal following his £42.5m move from Real Madrid back in the 2013 summer transfer window.
Writing in his Paddy Power column about Ozil’s contract demands, former Germany and Liverpool midfielder Hamann warned the Arsenal star that he needs to fire the Gunners to more silverware to justify earning £300,000 a week.
“I would offer Ozil a new deal at Arsenal though, but only on the right terms. I’d make the offer performance related because it should act as a motivation tool,” Hamann said.
“If his contributions see Arsenal finish in the top four next season or even emerge as Premier League champions then no one will have a problem with him earning top dollar.”
Arsenal will take on Premier League leader Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley later this month.
The Gunners are in sixth place in the Premier League table.
