Arsenal open talks with Premier League star, he could be first summer signing – report
Arsenal and Manchester City are leading the race to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, say reports
Arsenal have opened talks with Virgil van Dijk about a possible summer transfer move for the Southampton star, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Star are claiming that the Gunners are leading Manchester City in the race to sign the defender this summer and that both clubs have been talks with the Dutchman over a possible move.
The same report states that Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton have also shown a strong interest in signing the 25-year-old but it is the Gunners and Manchester City who are currently in front in the race for his signature.
The defender is currently sidelined with a foot injury and could have played his last game for Southampton if indeed he does leave St Mary’s this summer.
The article claims that the battle for Van Dijk’s signature could become one of the biggest stories of the forthcoming summer transfer window.
Van Dijk has scored one goal in 21 Premier League games for Southampton so far this season.
Arsenal signed defender Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia last summer but the Gunners have still be criticised this season for their form at the back under Arsene Wenger.
