Alan Pardew opens up about Chelsea manager Antonio Conte
The former Crystal Palace manager singles out Antonio Conte for special praise after his impact at Chelsea
Alan Pardew has explained why Chelsea’s Antonio Conte would be his choice for manager of the season.
The Italian coach took over the reins at the west London club at the end of the 2015-16 campaign after Chelsea finished in tenth place.
The Blues made a steady start under Conte before losing back-to-back games to top-four rivals Arsenal and Liverpool in September.
Conte opted to switch to a 3-4-3 formation following the defeats and Chelsea haven’t looked back since the tactical change.
Only Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Tottenham have managed to beat Chelsea in their next 29 games in the Premier League.
The Blues are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and four points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham.
Pardew, who left Palace earlier this season before their win at Stamford Bridge, hailed Conte’s impact at the west London club.
“Conte, without a doubt for me, has been manager of the season,” Pardew told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“To go and make that tactical change at a big club from going to a four to a back three and making such a success of it…
“He has had some fantastic wins against the top teams. He was new to the Premier League. He didn’t really know it.
“He has changed the training regime there. He has made it much tougher. For a foreign manager coming in, he has been as good as anybody.”
Chelsea are looking to win a second Premier League title in three seasons but their first under Conte.
