Gary Neville explains the difference between Chelsea’s Antonio Conte and his rivals
The Manchester United legend says Antonio Conte has put a greater emphasis on defence than Chelsea's title rivals
Gary Neville says Chelsea manager Antonio Conte pays more attention to his defence than his Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City rivals.
Conte is on the cusp of winning his first Premier League title as Chelsea make the trip to West Brom on Friday night knowing that three points will secure the trophy.
Chelsea moved seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur after a 3-0 win against Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
The Blues are the Premier League’s top goal-scorers after netting 75 times in 35 games in the 2016-17 season.
But Chelsea have also excelled defensively, and only Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have conceded less goals than the Premier League leaders.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football about Conte’s defensive mentality, former Manchester United defender Neville said:
“I know they’ve scored a lot of goals this season but I look at Conte and there is a balance to his team. He pays a lot of attention to defence.
“They’re not a Klopp, Guardiola or Wenger type of team in attack. They’re not reckless. They always have security.”
Conte could finish the season with the Premier League title and FA Cup trophy ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Arsenal in the Wembley showpiece later in May.
The Blues appointed Conte as Guus Hiddink’s permanent successor at the end of the 2015-16 season.
