Pundit makes claim about Chelsea ahead of West Brom clash
The former Chelsea midfielder believes Antonio Conte's men have been producing their best form of the 2016-17 season
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea have been producing some of their best form of the 2016-17 season over the past couple of weeks.
Chelsea looked to be faltering under pressure from title rivals Tottenham Hotspur after surprise losses to Crystal Palace and Manchester United in early April.
However, the Blues have steadied the ship in recent weeks thanks to emphatic victories over Everton and Southampton to cement their position at the top of the table.
Tottenham suffered a 1-0 loss to West Ham United at London Stadium last week to hand the momentum to Antonio Conte’s men ahead of the visit of Middlesbrough on Monday night.
Chelsea eased to a 3-0 win against Middlesbrough thanks to goals from Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso and Nemanja Matic at Stamford Bridge.
The west London side are sitting seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham with three games to go in the title race.
Writing in his Chelsea column about the leaders’ performances in recent weeks, Nevin said:
“It really has been a fabulous couple of weeks with wins against Spurs, Southampton, Everton and Middlesbrough, 14 goals scored and such expansive football played.
“In fact this could be the best spell of play from the team all season and that is saying something! It means this little period could even be eclipsed over the next few weeks if they can keep the form going.
“Nothing has been won yet and Antonio will be drumming that in to anyone who will listen.
“It is however great to be on an upward spiral, playing as well and looking as fit as at any point in the past couple of years, just as the crescendo approaches.”
Chelsea will make the trip to West Brom in their next Premier League game on Friday night.
