Ex-Chelsea coach sends message to Antonio Conte about Cesc Fabregas
Ray Wilkins explains why Chelsea need to keep hold of Cesc Fabregas beyond the summer transfer window
Ray Wilkins has warned Antonio Conte that Chelsea will need Cesc Fabregas for their return to the Champions League next season.
The 30-year-old midfielder has been a consistent performer for the Blues this season despite his lack of playing time under Conte.
Fabregas has started just 10 Premier League games this term but has still managed to notch up four goals and nine assists in a total of 25 top-flight appearances.
Former Chelsea coach Wilkins is clearly a keen admirer of the ex-Arsenal captain and believes that the Blues need someone of Fabregas’ calibre for their return to Champions League football next season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Thursday, Wilkins said: “You’ll be playing in the Champions League next year and you need that craft, you need that experience of someone like Cesc.
“I can understand Antonio’s selection when he picks (Nemanja) Matic and (N’Golo) Kante in front of a back five.
“But with Cesc, it’s just job satisfaction and he loves to play football. You can see that when he plays. He’s always trying to get on the ball.”
Fabregas will be hoping to be involved for Chelsea when the Blues take on Middlesbrough in their next Premier League game on Monday night.
The midfielder came on and set up Willian’s goal in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.
