Jamie Redknapp has praised David Luiz’s performances at Chelsea this season.

The Brazil defender moved back to the west London side in a £29m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window following Antonio Conte’s appointment.

Luiz’s return to Chelsea came just over two years after Jose Mourinho decided to sell the centre-half in a £50m transfer to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The South American defender established himself as a key part of Conte’s defence after the Chelsea manager switched to a 3-4-3 formation.

And Luiz has answered his critics with composed performances throughout the campaign, despite his reputation for committing needless mistakes during his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp believes Luiz has established himself as a great defender under Conte’s management.

“You have to give David Luiz some credit because when he first came back a lot of people were questioning that as a bad decision,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“He’s changed so many people’s minds this year. When he left people used to laugh at some of his defending – now you look at him and he is a serious defender.

“Great on the ball, he has had a brilliant season, he really has.”

Luiz won the Champions League and the Europa League during his first stint at the west London club.

Chelsea can win the FA Cup this season if Conte’s side beat Arsenal in the final at Wembley.
