David Luiz: I’d swap award for the Premier League title with Chelsea
The Chelsea defender is desperate to get his hands on the Premier League title this season
David Luiz admits he would swap personal accolades in favour of lifting the Premier League title.
The Chelsea defender was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year after an outstanding first season back in the English top flight.
Luiz returned to the west London side in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Chelsea appointed Antonio Conte as their new manager following a tenth-place finish in the Premier League under Guus Hiddink last term.
Conte opted to partner Luiz alongside fellow defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill in a 3-4-3 formation.
Speaking to Chelsea’s website about the Premier League title bid, Luiz explained that he would be happy to swap his place in the PFA team for a first English top-flight crown.
“It’s amazing for me [to be in the PFA team] but what’s most important is the title,” Luiz said.
“It’s great to see the individual side and be recognised by other players. I’m working hard every day to show my best and I’m so happy but I’d change it for the title. If I could win both that would be amazing.”
Chelsea are in the FA Cup final but Conte’s men will face Arsenal at Wembley.
The Blues will make the trip to West Brom in the Premier League on Friday night as they look to secure the title.
