David Luiz sends title message to Arsenal and Liverpool
The Chelsea defender pinpoints September's losses to Arsenal and Liverpool as the turning point in their 2016-17 season
David Luiz has highlighted losing to Arsenal and Liverpool as the turning point in Chelsea’s Premier League campaign.
Antonio Conte’s side are on the cusp of a first Premier League title under the Italian coach ahead of this Friday’s clash against West Bromwich Albion.
Chelsea won their first three Premier League games before the west London side dropped points in a 2-2 draw with relegation-threatened Swansea City.
The Blues lost to Liverpool and Arsenal in their next Premier League games to heap pressure on Conte following a return of 10 points from a possible 18.
Chelsea made the switch to their lauded 3-4-3 formation, which included a back three of Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and Luiz.
The Blues lost three times in their next 29 games in the Premier League to put clear daylight between the leaders and Tottenham Hotspur in the title race.
Speaking to Chelsea’s website about their turning point in the season, Luiz had a message for Arsenal and Liverpool.
“After those two games we changed our system and it’s worked very well because of the quality of our players, the style and the way we play,” Luiz said.
“In the Premier League you don’t have a lot of time to cry. There are always big games and you need to react within three or four days. We trusted our quality and it’s good to have the sense to understand games.
“We played well against Liverpool but didn’t get the result. Against Arsenal we played a terrible game but we still had opportunities to score, so you need to analyse these type of situations, which is what we did, and after that it’s gone very well.”
