Pundit: Chelsea need to spend big this summer, this player looks like he’s leaving

John Hartson says Chelsea will have to strengthen their squad significantly in the summer transfer window

John Hartson has warned Chelsea that the Blues will need to spend big in the summer transfer window to continue their progress under Antonio Conte.

The west London side have earned plenty of praise for their performances this season under Conte following his arrival as the club’s new manager last summer.

Chelsea are flying high at the top of the Premier League table and can move seven points clear of Tottenham if they beat Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

The Blues have already secured a return to the Champions League next season and former Arsenal man Hartson feels that the west London club will have to be very active in the summer transfer window.

Hartson also reckons that striker Diego Costa could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Hartson told BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show: “He [Conte] now has to be consistent, he has to add [to his squad in the summer].

“I think they possibly might lose Diego Costa, who’s a huge player for them when he plays.

“From Conte’s point of view, he has to keep strengthening and adding that quality to the quality he already has.”
