Frank Lampard: This Chelsea star can replace John Terry as captain
The Chelsea legend believes Gary Cahill would be a good captain if called upon to succeed John Terry
Frank Lampard believes Gary Cahill is a worthy successor to Chelsea captain John Terry.
The Blues defender has skippered the west London side throughout most of the 2016-17 season given Terry’s struggles to break into Antonio Conte’s first-team.
Cahill captained the Chelsea side on Friday night as Michy Batshuayi’s winner at West Bromwich Albion secured a second title in three seasons for the Blues.
Chelsea skipper John Terry is set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2016-17 season after struggling to break into the Italian coach’s starting line-up.
Terry’s departure will mean Chelsea will have a new club captain at the start of the 2017-18 campaign as the west London side look to defend their Premier League crown.
Chelsea’s record goal-scorer Lampard believes Cahill is a good candidate to get the job on a permanent basis despite being a different type of leader than Terry.
“Yes [he will make a good captain],” Lampard told Sky Sports.
“He’s not like a John Terry captain, he’s not vocal in the dressing room pre-game, he’s a quieter lad and very tough on himself and his game.
“But he’s grown into that captaincy role.”
Chelsea are sitting 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, having won the title with two games to spare.
