Gary Neville: Chelsea need this defender to replace John Terry
The former Manchester United defender is excited to see whether David Luiz can fill John Terry's void at Chelsea
Gary Neville admits he is intrigued to see whether David Luiz can fill John Terry’s void in the Chelsea defence.
The Brazil international moved to Chelsea in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016 summer transfer window following Antonio Conte’s replacement.
Luiz slotted into the Chelsea defence alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill to help the west London side secure the Premier League title this season.
Chelsea captain Terry has spent most of the season on the fringes of Conte’s first-team after falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The 36-year-old is set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season as the west London club prepare for life without their talismanic defender.
Speaking to Sky Sports about what Neville is excited to watch develop in the Premier League next season, the Manchester United legend singled out Luiz.
“He has had an outstanding season. He has been dependable and reliable. John Terry is leaving.
“Can Luiz come back and be the Terry for the next two or three seasons? That is something interesting to watch.”
Chelsea signed five players in the summer transfer window following Conte’s appointment as manager.
