Gary Neville’s response when asked whether Romelu Lukaku would be success at Chelsea
Gary Neville believes Romelu Lukaku is a player that Chelsea want to add to their squad
Gary Neville believes Romelu Lukaku would thrive in the Chelsea side.
The Belgium international has been linked with a sensational return to Chelsea less than four seasons after the powerful centre-forward quit Stamford Bridge in 2013.
Lukaku opted to leave Chelsea after Jose Mourinho failed to guarantee the Chelsea striker regular first-team football at the west London club.
The 23-year-old has flourished at Goodison Park over the past couple of seasons and Lukaku is the Premier League’s leading goal-scorer after netting 24 times in the 2016-17 campaign.
Chelsea could lose first-choice striker Diego Costa to China at the end of the season amid growing reports of a lucrative move to Asia for the controversial Spain international.
Asked whether Lukaku would be a success at Chelsea under current manager Antonio Conte, former Manchester United defender Neville told Sky Sports:
“I think he could do it at Chelsea. I do. The quality of players around him is completely different at Chelsea. He would benefit from that.
“Is he the finished article? No. He could be the most devastating centre-forward in the world on his day. You’re always questioning whether he fancies it.
“If he was to go to Chelsea, we’d find it out. He is the type of striker Chelsea need. He can occupy defenders. He doesn’t tend to need a partner to play on his own.
“The’ll be judging him over a long period than just Sunday. I still think he is a player they will want at the club.”
Former Anderlecht striker Lukaku has scored 67 times in 134 games in all competitions for the Merseyside outfit during a four-season stint at Goodison Park.
