Jamie Carragher tells Antonio Conte to make this Chelsea summer signing
The Liverpool legend believes Chelsea could sign a centre-half in the summer transfer window
Jamie Carragher has urged Chelsea manager Antonio Conte to sign a new centre-half in the summer.
The Blues coach opted to go with a 3-4-3 formation for most of the 2016-17 season, with a 3-0 loss at Arsenal in September prompting Conte to mix up his tactics.
Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and David Luiz have been Chelsea’s first-choice centre-halves throughout the 2016-17 season, with John Terry and Kurt Zouma providing cover.
Chelsea eased to the Premier League title thanks to a 1-0 win at West Brom last Friday, which secured the trophy ahead of Tottenham Hotspur with two games to spare.
The Chelsea captain is set to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer after failing to make an impression under Italian boss Conte.
The west London side are set to return to the Champions League next season, which will place big demands on Conte’s squad.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football about whether Chelsea need to make some signings in the summer transfer window, Carragher said:
“I still think there is a [new] centre-half that could go into that back three.
“I think Cahill – even though he is the captain and has had a great season – teams always let the ball go to him. They could expose him.”
Conte signed five players in the summer transfer window last year following his appointment as manager.
