Jamie Carragher: Chelsea could target this top defender, Antonio Conte knows him
The Liverpool legend believes Chelsea could sign Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini in the summer
Jamie Carragher has suggested that Chelsea could target Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini in the summer transfer window.
Antonio Conte took over the reins from interim boss Guus Hiddink as Chelsea’s permanent manager in at the end of the 2015-16 season after a disappointing tenth-placed finish.
The Italian signed David Luiz in a 32m deal from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window following his appointment as their boss.
Chelsea had the second-best defensive record in the Premier League before Conte made wholesale changes for the visit of Watford on Monday night, which finished in a 4-3 win for the champions.
Chelsea were heavily linked with Juventus duo Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci in last summer’s transfer window but a deal failed to materialise despite Conte’s ties to the Italian duo.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football about where Conte could improve his Chelsea side in the 2017 summer transfer window, former Liverpool defender Carragher said:
“You mention Juventus. Could they get someone from that back three?
“You’ve got Chiellini. He obviously has a relationship with Conte from Juventus and Italy. That is the calibre of player they’ll need.
“A really top player who can take them that next step to the Champions League.”
Chelsea are seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, having won the league title with two games to spare.
