Harry Redknapp questions Chelsea’s attempts to sign 24-year-old striker
The former Spurs boss can't believe that Chelsea could end up spending £100m on Romelu Lukaku over two transfers
Harry Redknapp admits he is surprised that Chelsea could be willing to spend £100m on Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgium international moved to Chelsea in a £17m deal from Belgian side Anderlecht in the 2011 summer transfer window.
However, Lukaku failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge and the striker was sent out on loan to West Brom and Everton.
The 24-year-old completed a £27m move to Everton in the 2013 summer transfer window after failing to tie down a regular starting spot under Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea have been linked with a big-money move to re-sign Lukaku as Antonio Conte looks to improve his attacking options in the summer.
Lukaku has scored 24 times in 36 games in the current Premier League campaign to attract interest from the newly-crowned champions.
Former Spurs manager Redknapp, though, questioned the size of Lukaku’s price tag amid reports Chelsea could spend £90m on the Belgium star.
“Lukaku might end up costing Chelsea more than £100m across two transfers,” Redknapp told the Evening Standard.
“It’s madness, really, but that’s the level we’ve got to now.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare after a 1-0 win against West Brom at The Hawthorns.
