Gary Neville: What Chelsea will think about Romelu Lukaku’s performance
Gary Neville believes Chelsea will judge Romelu Lukaku on the past 12 months, not just on his performance on Sunday afternoon
Gary Neville doesn’t believe Chelsea will be deterred in their efforts to sign Romelu Lukaku despite the striker’s subdued performance on Sunday.
The Belgium international came up against his former club Chelsea in the Premier League clash at Goodison Park amid reports of a potential return to London at the end of the season.
However, Lukaku failed to trouble the defence aside from an early opportunity as Antonio Conte’s side eased to a comfortable three points on the blue half of Merseyside.
The 24-year-old is the Premier League’s leading goal-scorer this season after an impressive return of 24 goals in 33 appearances in the English top-flight campaign.
Indeed, Lukaku has scored five goals more than Chelsea striker Diego Costa as Conte prepares for life without the Spain international at the end of the season.
Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast, the former Manchester United defender poured cold water on talk of Lukaku’s quiet performance affecting Chelsea’s interest in the striker.
“I actually thought in the first 20 minutes, he looked dangerous. Chelsea know him very well. Chelsea will have watched him a lot over the past 12 to 18 months.
“He would be different in the Chelsea team. The ball up to him would be a lot more consistent. They wouldn’t judge him just on the performance. They’ll judge him over a longer period than that.”
Lukaku moved to Everton from Chelsea in 2013.
