Gary Neville sends warning to Chelsea about signing Romelu Lukaku
The Manchester United legend says Chelsea could struggle to keep Diego Costa and Romelu Lukaku both happy in the Blues squad
Gary Neville has warned Antonio Conte that there could be “tension” if Chelsea sign Romelu Lukaku and keep Diego Costa in the summer.
The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with a big-money move to sign Everton striker Lukaku at the end of the 2016-17 season.
The Belgium international has scored 24 goals in 36 games in the Premier League this season, which is more than any other striker in the English top flight.
Lukaku moved to Everton from Chelsea in a 27m deal in 2013 after Jose Mourinho failed to guarantee the powerful striker regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.
Costa has been vital in Chelsea’s title successes in 2015 and 2017, scoring 52 goals in 87 games in the Premier League.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football about the headache facing Conte in the summer transfer market, Neville said:
“I want someone to take Costa’s place. So, if Lukaku comes in but Costa stays, all of a sudden there is a bit of tension.
“How do they handle that tension in the dressing room?”
Chelsea signed five players in the summer transfer window last term following Conte’s appointment as manager.
The Blues will take on Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday 27 May.
