Pat Nevin: Why Chelsea fans need to trust Antonio Conte ahead of Arsenal clash
The Chelsea legend discusses the selection headache facing Antonio Conte ahead of the FA Cup final at Wembley
Pat Nevin has urged Chelsea fans to trust Antonio Conte to get his team selection right for their FA Cup final clash against Arsenal at Wembley.
Conte made the controversial decision to leave Diego Costa and Eden Hazard on the bench for their FA Cup semi-final in April which proceeded a 2-0 loss to Manchester United.
The Italian coach brought on Costa and Hazard in the second half with Chelsea drawing 2-2 with Tottenham in the last-four clash after Tottenham twice cancelled out their rival’s lead.
Hazard made the difference in the semi-final clash after the Belgian star scored Chelsea’s third goal before he teed up Nemanja Matic for his wonder goal to secure a 4-2 win.
The Blues manager hasn’t been afraid to make some big decisions in the Premier League too, after Conte took off Hazard with 16 minutes to go in their clash at West Brom on Friday night.
His replacement Michy Batshuayi scored an 82nd-minute winner to secure a second Premier League title in three seasons for the west London club.
Writing in his Chelsea column about the selection headache facing Conte ahead of the FA Cup final at Wembley, former Blues winger Nevin said:
“Eden Hazard and Diego Costa on the bench in the semi and coming on to destroy Spurs.
“Michy coming on to win us the league at West Brom, and even Cesc rising from the bench to score the winner against Watford.
“Antonio’s substitutions have been superb this season, but they appear to be getting even better as the big calls have to be made at the end of the season.
“I think I will stop second guessing and just trust in the gaffer.”
