Jamie Carragher predicts where Liverpool, Man United finish
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are in a great position to finish ahead of Manchester United in the top-four race
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are in a great position in the race to secure a top-four finish.
The Reds had the chance to put some daylight between themselves and their rivals after Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United all dropped points over the weekend.
Liverpool seized their opportunity thanks to Emre Can’s wonder goal on the stroke of half-time to seal a 1-0 win against Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday night.
The 18-time English champions are in third place in the Premier League table and four points ahead of Manchester United in the hunt for a Champions League spot.
Manchester United will make the trip to Arsenal in their next Premier League game at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will welcome Southampton to Anfield as the Reds look to beat the EFL Cup runners-up for the first time at the fourth attempt this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football about Liverpool’s top-four prospects, Carragher said: “They (Liverpool) were in a fantastic position (after the weekend) and they’ve made the most of it now.
“You look at those games and you say if Arsenal win those two games, they’re only three points behind but I don’t know if they have the belief that they could get to 69 points by the end of the season. I think Manchester United’s next two games, I think minimum they must take four points. That’s Tottenham away and Arsenal away.
“They are capable of that and that could happen. But I think tonight has put Liverpool in a great position considering the fixture next week between Arsenal and Manchester United and Liverpool have a game you’d expect them to win (against Southampton). We said that last week against Palace but you would expect them to win.”
