Pundit sends blunt message to Jurgen Klopp about Liverpool defence
Jason McAteer believes Liverpool's poor defending has caught up with them in the top-four race
Jason McAteer believes Liverpool’s defensive problems have caught up with Jurgen Klopp’s in the top-four race.
Liverpool are looking to secure a long-awaited return to the Champions League this season with two games to go in the 2016-17 season.
The Reds are in third place in the Premier League table but still face competition from Arsenal and Manchester United.
Liverpool have conceded 42 times in 36 games in the 2016-17 campaign which is more goals than their top-six rivals.
The Merseyside outfit produced some of the Premier League’s best football in the first half of the season.
However, the Reds are struggling to get over the line in the top-four race in the absence of the club’s player of the season Sadio Mane.
Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk about Liverpool’s performances throughout Klopp’s first full season in charge, ex-midfielder McAteer said:
“I’ve really enjoyed this season. I think top four was the aim. I felt a cup as well.
“He probably feels a little hard done by in the EFL Cup against Southampton. Up until Man City game, lots of goals but really getting away with the way we were defending.
“I felt it was very similar to the way my team was around 1996-1998. There’s only so far that will take you. You’ve got to have some nous. It’s no surprise they’ve the worst defence in the top seven.
“It’s been their Achilles Heel this season. It’s caught up with them.”
Liverpool will make the trip to West Ham United in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
The Hammers were 1-0 winners against second-placed Tottenham last time out.
