Ray Parlour issues backing for Jurgen Klopp despite poor Liverpool signings
The former Arsenal midfielder believes Jurgen Klopp will be successful at Liverpool despite mixed start
Ray Parlour has issued his backing for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp despite the Reds’s inconsistent form in the second half of the 2016-17 Premier League season.
The Reds finished 2016 in second place after Georginio Wijnaldum’s header secured a 1-0 win against title rivals Manchester City at Anfield to end the year on a high.
However, the 18-time English champions have fallen off the pace in the title race to leave a top-four finish a realistic target for Klopp and his entertaining Reds side.
Liverpool looked to be on course to secure a long-awaited return to the Champions League after successive wins on the road at Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion in April.
However, Christian Benteke scored twice on his return to Anfield to help Crystal Palace to secure a surprise 2-1 win at Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend.
Klopp has naturally come under some criticism for Liverpool’s inconsistent displays, with their defence continuing to leak sloppy goals since his appointment.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Parlour is confident that the ex-Borussia Dortmund head coach will get it right at Anfield.
“I think he will [get it right at Liverpool]. The transfer window was the problem,” Parlour told the Alan Brazil podcast.
“He didn’t really buy a couple of key players to guarantee them the Champions League. They’ve had some bad injuries to key players like Lallana, Henderson and Mane. He [Mane] has been one of the signings of the season.”
