Martin Keown predicts where both Liverpool and Arsenal will finish
The Arsenal legend doesn't expect Liverpool to slip up in the top-four race
Martin Keown has backed Liverpool to secure a Champions League spot with victory over Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon.
The Merseyside outfit are sitting in fourth place and a point ahead of Arsenal in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
Arsenal moved to within a point of Liverpool thanks to a 2-0 win against relegated Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s men will host Middlesbrough in their final game at Anfield after Boro were relegated following a 3-0 loss to Chelsea earlier this month.
Liverpool will end Arsenal’s impressive record of finishing in the top four in 21 successive seasons under Arsene Wenger if Klopp’s side beat Middlesbrough.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about the top-four race ahead of the final weekend of the Premier League season, former defender Keown said:
“I would be very surprised if there is a twist now. Liverpool host relegated Middlesbrough while Manchester City go to Watford who have just sacked their manager.
“I don’t think either side could have wished for an easier fixture!
“For Arsene Wenger, the last few weeks have been about repairing pride. Arsenal have done that, winning seven of their last eight matches.
“It has restored Arsenal’s confidence and put them in a good shape going into the Cup final.
“I don’t think Arsenal have more than an outside chance of reaching the top four — but if they do, Arsene Wenger is truly magical!”
Liverpool are looking to secure a place in the Champions League for the first time since 2013-14 after last weekend’s 4-0 win at West Ham United.
