Legend sends warning to Liverpool about finishing in fourth place
Phil Thompson warns Liverpool about the perils of finishing fourth place instead of third in the Premier League
Phil Thompson has warned Liverpool that finishing in third place is vital ahead of a potential return to the Champions League.
The Merseyside outfit are three points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester City after Monday night’s 1-0 win against Watford at Vicarage Road.
Liverpool are looking to secure a long-awaited return to Europe’s premier club competition after a two-season absence under Jurgen Klopp.
The 18-time English champions could face a tough game in the Champions League play-off should Manchester City overhaul Liverpool in the final games of the season.
Their bitter rivals Everton crashed out of the competition in 2005 after the Toffees were pitted against Villarreal in the play-off stage of the competition.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the perils of finishing in fourth place, former Liverpool captain Thompson had a warning for Klopp’s side.
“Monday’s game was absolutely massive and was very pleasing in many aspects, especially the way they defended against such a physical attack,” Thompson said.
“It was also a goal worthy of winning any game from Emre Can.
“Finishing third is really important. Playing in the qualifying round means you have to be prepared earlier and there’s always a danger of getting a tough tie or a really long journey.
“I’d still take fourth now because it makes enticing players so much easier, but you go back to when Everton finished fourth and got Villarreal, so it can be dangerous.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League last term.
Klopp signed seven players in last summer’s transfer window in an attempt to overhaul the squad.
