Jamie Carragher: This player is Liverpool’s equivalent to Alexis Sanchez
The Liverpool legend praises Philippe Coutinho for stepping up with the pressure on Jurgen Klopp's side at West Ham United
Jamie Carragher felt that Philippe Coutinho responded to Alexis Sanchez’s Arsenal heroics with a brilliant performance in Liverpool’s 4-0 win at West Ham on Sunday.
The Arsenal forward scored the north London side’s third goal in a 4-1 victory over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium to move Arsene Wenger’s side to within a point of Liverpool.
Sanchez has scored two goals in his last two Premier League games to keep the north London side’s slim hopes of a Champions League spot alive.
Brazil international Coutinho responded with an assist for Daniel Sturridge’s opener and two second-half goals at the London Stadium to secure three vital points.
The Liverpool number 10 has scored six times and has made two assists in his last eight appearances in the Premier League.
Carragher was encouraged to see Coutinho raising his game to match Sanchez’s efforts at Arsenal in the top-four race.
“Alexis has stepped it up for Arsenal,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“He was going to be the star player to take Arsenal to the top four. Coutinho did that [today]. He is Liverpool’s star player.
“He is the one player other clubs in world football would be looking at.”
Liverpool will host Middlesbrough in their final game of the season with victory enough to secure a top-four finish.
