Gary Neville sends warning to Jurgen Klopp about Liverpool defence
The Manchester United legend urges Jurgen Klopp to fix Liverpool's defensive problems ahead of the 2016-17 season
Gary Neville has urged Jurgen Klopp to fix Liverpool’s defence in the summer transfer window.
The Reds have struggled in the second half of the 2016-17 season after an impressive start to the Premier League campaign.
Klopp alternated between Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet in the opening months of the season before the Liverpool boss settled with the Belgium international in goal.
Summer signing Joel Matip has struggled with injuries to limit his playing time alongside centre-half partner Dejan Lovren.
James Milner, meanwhile, has been played out of position at left-back throughout the 2016-17 campaign given Alberto Moreno’s erratic performances.
Liverpool have been linked with a big-money deal to sign Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a £50m deal from Southampton.
Former Manchester United defender Michael Keane has been touted as another potential target for Klopp.
Speaking to Monday Night Football about Liverpool’s poor defence in the 2016-17 campaign, former Manchester United defender Neville said:
“Liverpool need that defence sorting out. They have conceded 50-plus goals for three, four, five years.
“They have not had a defensive lynchpin since he [Carra] retired. They have been changing around centre-back pairings and never really had a settled duo. It’s not right.”
Liverpool have conceded 42 times in 36 games in the Premier League this season.
