Jurgen Klopp urged to make this Liverpool summer signing
Chris Sutton believes Liverpool need to sign a top left-back in the summer transfer window
Chris Sutton has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a top left-back to replace James Milner this summer.
The Reds have been utilising their vice-captain in an unorthodox left-back role throughout the 2016-17 campaign despite Milner playing as a midfielder for most of his Premier League career.
Milner has acquitted himself well at full-back, although the 31-year-old has struggled to provide natural width pushing forward to support Liverpool’s attacking players.
Spain international Alberto Moreno has spent most of the season on the bench, after his erratic performances eroded Klopp’s confidence in the former Sevilla defender.
Liverpool will secure a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League if Klopp’s side manage to beat relegated Middlesbrough in their final Premier League game of the season.
Speaking to BBC Radio’s 606 podcast, former Chelsea striker Sutton encouraged Liverpool manager Klopp to address the left-back issue in the summer transfer window.
“James Milner has done a sterling job. If Liverpool want to push, they need a natural left-back,” Sutton said.
Liverpool signed seven players in the summer transfer window last year.
The Reds finished in eighth place in the Premier League table.
