Gary Neville: This is what I really think about Man United defender
The Manchester United legend was impressed with Axel Tuanzebe's performance in a 2-0 win against Arsenal at The Emirates
Gary Neville has described Axel Tuanzebe as a really good defender after the Manchester United teenager impressed on his debut in a 2-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
The 19-year-old was handed a place in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up as the Manchester United manager made a number of changes to his starting line-up.
Tuanzebe came up against Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates Stadium and the Manchester United teenager kept tabs on the Chile international.
Neville, like Tuanzebe, broke into the Manchester United team as a teenager under Sir Alex Ferguson before winning the Premier League title in 1996.
The Manchester United legend was impressed with how Tuanzebe got the better of Sanchez on a number of occasions in the English capital.
“He was United’s big plus against Arsenal. He stuck to his task and showed what a really good defender he is,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.
“Before the game and from what I heard of him, he’s like a rash, he sticks to you and gets his foot in. There were a couple of times where he was in tussles with Sanchez and he got the better of him.
“A lot of people said when Mourinho came to Manchester United that he didn’t like bringing kids through, he doesn’t like playing them but today he had four homegrown players on the pitch at the end of the game and that is very important.
“Obviously in the future, they have to win and start thinking about the Premier League but a really good start to his Premier League career for Tuanzebe. It was a good debut.”
The full-back helped Manchester United to ease to a 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup earlier this year.
The Red Devils will welcome La Liga side Celta Vigo in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night.
