Graeme Souness sends message to Ander Herrera about Man United display
Graeme Souness criticises Ander Herrera for his performance in Manchester United's defeat by Arsenal
Graeme Souness has criticised Ander Herrera for his defending in the build-up to Arsenal’s first goal in their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
The Spanish midfielder failed to close down Granit Xhaka in time before the midfielder’s shot deflected off Herrera’s back and looped into the back of the net in the 54th minute at The Emirates.
Danny Welbeck then scored against his former club once again to wrap up the victory for Arsene Wenger’s men and keep their faint hopes of a top-four finish alive.
Herrera was seen giving Xhaka too much space in front of Manchester United’s penalty area in the build-up to the goal and Souness was not impressed by the midfielder’s play.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Souness said: “Herrera has been having a good time of late but he’s the biggest culprit here [for Xhaka’s goal].
“Go to the ball son, get at him. As a midfield player defending on the edge of the box you have to put pressure on the ball.
“What is Herrera doing? It’s not as if he’s got Arsenal bodies around him.
“He commits a sin by completely turning his back on it. It says he’s scared to take a blow for the cause. Herrera was at fault.”
Herrera will be hoping to help Manchester United return to winning ways when the Red Devils host Celta Vigo in the return leg of their Europa League clash at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
