David De Gea congratulates Ander Herrera after the midfielder was named as Manchester United's player of the year
David De Gea has congratulated Ander Herrera after the midfielder was named as Manchester United’s player of the year.
The Spanish midfielder collected his trophy on Thursday night as he stopped De Gea’s domination of the prize, with the goalkeeper having won the award for the previous three seasons.
Herrera just pipped Antonio Valencia to the award, with the Spaniard finishing only 242 votes ahead of the Ecuador international.
And De Gea was full of praise for Herrera following his strong displays for Manchester United under new boss Jose Mourinho this season.
The goalkeeper told Manchester United’s website: “He’s a top guy and a good friend.
“He’s an emotional player who plays with heart on the pitch and he’s a good player, to be fair!”
Herrera will be hoping to help Manchester United qualify for next season’s Champions League when they take on Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils will host Crystal Palace in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday afternoon as they look to sign off with a win before travelling to Sweden.
