Paul Merson predicts where Man United and Arsenal will finish
Paul Merson is expecting to see both Manchester United and Arsenal miss out on top-four finishes
Paul Merson is expecting both Manchester United and Arsenal to miss out on top-four finishes in the Premier League this season.
The Red Devils suffered another blow to their top-four hopes on Sunday when they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Swansea at Old Trafford to leave them fifth with four games left to play.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continued their miserable run of form as they were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday to leave Arsene Wenger’s men sixth in the table and with their top-four hopes out of their hands.
Manchester United are currently gearing up for their Europa League semi-final clash against Celta Vigo and know that winning the competition would secure their spot in next season’s Europa League.
And former Arsenal star Merson is expecting Liverpool and Manchester City to join Chelsea and Tottenham in securing their places in next season’s Champions League.
Merson told Sky Sports: “United have got too many difficult games and they’ve got to put their eggs into the Europa League basket right now.
“They’ve got to weigh it up. If they win their next three games in the Europa League then they’ll qualify for the Champions League, whereas if they win all four of their league games they could still miss out.
“As for Arsenal, they were embarrassing on Sunday. They’ve got some tough games still and they’re just not playing well enough to win them all, even if those above them slip up.”
Manchester United finished fifth last season, while Arsenal ended up second.
