Danny Welbeck sends ‘special’ message to Man United fans
Danny Welbeck had a message for Manchester United's supporters after scoring against his former club again
Danny Welbeck has insisted that Manchester United will always be special to him after he helped to fire Arsenal to a 2-0 win over his former club on Sunday.
After a goalless first half at The Emirates, Granit Xhaka broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when his long-range effort deflected in off Ander Herrera’s back.
Welbeck then netted the second goal of the game when he headed home Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fine cross just three minutes later.
The striker came through Manchester United’s youth system but was deemed to be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford by former boss Louis van Gaal and was sold to Arsenal in September 2014.
Speaking after the game about scoring against his former club, Welbeck told Sky Sports: “Obviously I grew up there and everything so it’s a special place in my life.
“But when we get on that pitch it’s business at the end of the day and I just try and get the points for the team – thankfully we did that today.
“When you score you’ve got to be happy, it’s only normal.”
Sunday’s win left Arsenal in sixth place in the Premier League table but the Gunners will move above Manchester United if they win their game in hand.
Arsenal are next in action when they take on Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
