Pundit sends warning to Man United about Europa League final
Martin Keown looks ahead to Manchester United's Europa League final clash with Ajax and what it means for the Red Devils
Martin Keown has warned Manchester United that this season will end up being a “massive disappointment” if they do not win the Europa League final next week.
The Red Devils are preparing to take on Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm next week as they look to book a place in next season’s Champions League.
Manchester United have missed out on a place in the top four in the Premier League, meaning that winning the trophy in Sweden next week is their last remaining chance of Champions League qualification.
And former Arsenal defender Keown believes that it will have been a season to forget for the Red Devils if they don’t beat Ajax next week.
Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Keown said: “There is a lot at stake next week for both the manager and the club. If United don’t win on Wednesday the season will have been a massive disappointment. The League Cup will feel like hollow consolation.
“But this long run of games has helped Mourinho improve his bond with his players. He wants players who are prepared to work and play out of their comfort zone.
“He could get more from his players in terms of attacking but this run to the Europa League final will help them for next season.
“If they win the Europa League, it gives United a platform — and Mourinho will make sure he builds upon it.”
Manchester United will take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday afternoon before turning their attentions to next week’s final.
