Gary Neville: Man United boss Jose Mourinho went too far
Gary Neville says Jose Mourinho made too many changes for Manchester United's 2-0 loss to Arsenal
Gary Neville has claimed that Jose Mourinho went a “step too far” by making eight changes to his Manchester United side for their clash with Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.
The Portuguese coach mixed up his team at The Emirates as the Red Devils slumped to a disappointing 2-0 loss to the Gunners in north London.
That result dealt a severe blow to Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top four this season and left them fifth in the Premier League table.
Mourinho opted to make the changes because he is now prioritising winning the Europa League as Manchester United’s best route into next season’s Champions League.
However, former Red Devils defender Neville has criticised Mourinho for making what he thinks were too many changes against Arsenal.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said: “I think making eight changes here [against Arsenal] was a step too far.
“They have been resilient over these last few months with obviously not losing a game in the Premier League, but then when they’ve had chances to capitalise on teams dropping points, they’ve never been able to step up and get into that top or get close.
“Ultimately, Man United have been riding both horses full pelt for the last couple of months and you’ve always felt it would be one game too far and I think today, it felt a little bit like that.”
Manchester United will look to book their place in the Europa League final when they host Celta Vigo in their semi-final second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
