Jose Mourinho: Man United would rather win Europa League than finish fourth
The Manchester United boss makes a big claim about the Europa League and top four
Jose Mourinho has insisted that he would rather win the Europa League and secure a place in the Champions League than finish fourth.
The Red Devils edged a step closer to reaching the Europa League final on Thursday night thanks to a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s superb free-kick.
Manchester United made the trip to London on Sunday in search of three points to boost their ailing top-four hopes.
Liverpool handed the Red Devils momentum in the race to secure a Champions League spot after Jurgen Klopp’s side played out a disappointing stalemate with Southampton.
Manchester United couldn’t capitalise on Liverpool’s poor result as Arsenal eased to an emphatic 2-0 win against Mourinho’s side.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils can still secure a return to the Champions League if Manchester United win the Europa League ahead of their second leg against Celta Vigo.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website about their faltering top-four challenge, Mourinho said:
“We have a competition which is the second biggest competition in Europe and we are almost there so the players want, I want, and I think a club like us would always prefer to go into Champions League by winning a trophy than by finishing fourth.
“What’s the difference between finishing fourth and fifth? The difference is just the Champions League so you go with everything in the Europa League.”
